Daytime System
An external condom catheter is used to channel the urine and direct it into a vinyl collecting bag [Figure 1], which, rather than being strapped to the leg, is hung suspended from the bottom edge of boxer shorts.

Both the vinyl collecting bag and rolled up external urinary catheter sheath shown [Figure 1].

Condom Catheter
The device shown in Figure 1 is the External Male Urinary Catheter of Intermed, Inc. Other similar appliances are commercially available, including those made of material other than latex, if allergies are a problem.

The Intermed product comes packed with a strip of adhesive material, which should be simply discarded A self-comforming tape (to be described) will be used to comfortably, and safely affix the condom. This tape can be removed later, without damaging the condom catheter, permitting its reuse.

Before applying the external condom sheath in the morning, after you are clean and dry following your morning shower, use liberal amounts of talcum powder or Johnson & Johnson Shower To Shower Body PowderTM, to dust over the penis and scrotum and groin. The external catheter is simply rolled onto the penis. [Figure 2]

Then, to safely fix it in place, so that it will not fall off during the day, use a self-adhering, stretchable, 1 inch tape such as CobanTM. Stretch the tape and gently encircle the condom near the base of the penis, overlapping the tape once to hold it in place.

Next, get a marking pen and draw two parallel lines between the area where you will cut the tape with a pair of scissors. [Figure 3] These lines will save you much time and frustration when you are trying to remove the tape at the end of the day.

It will also help starting the tape application the next day. The tape is remarkably conforming, and the cut ends are otherwise difficult to find.

Condom Care
When the sheath is removed after a day’s use, wash it thoroughly under a stream of cold water. Let the condom dry out over night. I insert the plastic nub on a door hook and let it hang there. It will stick together as it dries.

Simply blow gently using the plastic nub as a nozzle while occluding the loose end with your fingers. It’s like blowing up a balloon.

Then, apply a small amount of corn starch into the open, dry sheath, and roll it up. It will then be ready for its next use. The corn starch can be dusted from any container that has a few small holes, like a salt shaker. I happen to use an old cylindrical Glide™ floss container for the purpose.
