Urinary incontinence brings discomfort and distress. Diapers do little to relieve either of these conditions. The patient is burdened by a bulky collecting pad which will hold quantities of urine and expose the groin and thigh skin to moisture and the possibility of skin rashes and infections. The risk of leakage, detection, and like mishaps, with activity, takes a psychological toll, as well.
Background
As a physician I was no more prepared for the consequences of the
stress incontinence that followed my radical prostatectomy than the countless
prostate cancer victims who are similarly affected. What bothered me, as a retired
professor of dermatology, was the advice to "wear diapers," since
it seemed an obvious affront to both my physical and psychological well being.
Adults should not have to wear diapers. My personal search for relief brought
me, through trial and error, to the practical, safe, efficient and economical
system which is outlined in "Diapers Be Damned." The general principles
should be applicable to most cases of male urinary incontinence regardless of
cause. The skin and the psyche of the patient are both protected allowing a
full and active life.
The Regimen
There are two parts of the program to help prevent the inadvertent soiling
from urinary incontinence. The first goal is to try to maintain good tone for
the muscles that help to control the flow of urine from the bladder. Click for
more information.
The other part consists of wearing external appliances that will collect the urine when it leaks, while keeping you comfortable, clean and dry, as you participate in daily activities. Click for more information.
